Cascadia Earthquakes: Reality, Risks and Improving Resilience
Speaker: Yumei Wang, DOGAMI
A major Cascadia earthquake and tsunami would likely produce an unprecedented catastrophe much larger than any disaster the state of Oregon has faced. Oregon's resilience to a Cascadia earthquake is low, thus, preparing fora catastrophic disaster to become more resilient is needed to improve personal safety and safeguard communities and businesses. Yumei will discuss Oregon’s earthquake setting, expected impacts from a Cascadia earthquake and howOregonians are preparing for “the big one”.
Yumei Wang is a resilience engineer at the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). She focuses on earthquake risk management for schools, emergency response facilities and critical lifelines infrastructure. Wang has appeared on PBS NewsHour, OPB,NOVA, National Geographic, and Discovery. Wang served as a Congressional Fellow in the U.S. Senate in Washington DC, and is the recipient of the 2018 ASCELeVal Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction.
