April WIC of the Month Kym Halstead

Employer: Northwest College of Construction

Kym has been the General Manager for her Metal Fabrication Company for four years called Vision Metal Works LLC.

Kym is a certified welder and has been welding for 17 years. She attended Mt. Hood Community College in 1993-1994 completing the Welding Technology Program. Kym is the Lead Welding Instructor at Northwest College of Construction for the last 3 ½ years. She is also involved in the Washington Association of Building Officials and holds the following certifications: Certified Welder Card
Structural Steel: FCAW, Plate, FHV Positions, Up, E71T-1, 1/8” & over, w/backing.
Certified with the City of Portland. With the same certifications.

Kym has worked at various companies over the last 18 years. She currently is also now employed as a Welding Instructor at Clackamas Community College.

Her and her husband also just started another company called American Strongbox. They fabricate fire pans which they have a patent pending. Also one of Kyms ideas has gone into production, she has designed a portable tool caddy, that attaches onto scissor lifts and various ariel lifts. And on a personal note, Kym trained and ran in the Portland Marathon (26.2 miles) last October. And yes she did finish!!!! Kim will also be the instructor at our April hands-on workshop meeting on the 19th.

March WIC of the Month - Rhonnda Parsons Edmiston

Establishes and monitors companywide Diversity & Business Equity goals and takes corrective action as necessary. Builds, maintains and leverages cross-divisional partnerships to align individual diversity goals within HSW’s strategic framework. This position acts as the primary point of contact and HSW representative to external partners and communities for Diversity & Business Equity.

November WIC of the Month - Penny Painter

Workforce Development Specialist

Penny has been a trail blazer in the construction industry for 30 years. She is a Journey Women Carpenter and in 1980 obtained her General Contractors license in Oregon. She owned and operated a construction business doing residential and commercial building for 18 years. In 1999, Penny decided to move her career in a new direction, focusing on Workforce
Development, she acquired a position with Oregon Tradeswomen and ended up working with two organizations, the Oregon Tradeswomen and the Evening Trades Apprenticeship Preparation (ETAPP) program. Within these positions her role was to recruit, train and assist women and people of color to learn the necessary skills to successfully gain employment in the construction industry through apprenticeship training. In 2005, Penny was offered the position of Workforce Development Specialist at Cooper Zietz Engineers, Inc. to manage an ODOT project called “The Oregon Native American Employment Initiative”, which increased the number of Native American
people working in the trades through apprenticeship programs by 155%. To date, Penny is still very passionate about her work and she continues mentoring and assisting women and people of color to gain access to sustainable livings in the construction industry. Penny is also the Co-Vice President of the Oregon Native American Chamber.

August - WIC of the Month - Ruby Jones

Ruby’s passion
for small businesses began early in life while
visiting her great uncle in Texas during the 1960’s.
He ran his own business in construction and
she learned first-hand from him the struggles he
encountered in the industry as a small business
owner. This planted a seed within her which grew
her passion for advocating for small business
today. Later in her career she began her own
business as an advocate for small businesses
prior to coming to Turner.

April WIC of the Month - Carmen Nale, PE

Carmen Nale, PE, has been a civil engineer at Black and Veatch for 9 years. She recieved her Bachelor in 2001 and Masters in 2002 in Civil Engineering with a minor in Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University.

Ms. Nale has been an engineering manager, a project engineer and design engineer in a variety of the water and wastewater design and construction projects. She has experience in the design and construction of projects including a 10 mgd waer pump station, various water and wastewater treatment plant improvements, and large diameter water and wastewater pipelines.

Her work experience includes master planning, permitting, conceptual design, detailed design, specifications, bid document preparation, and construction phase services.

She is active in the American Water Works Association Engineering Committee. She enjoys running, mountain climbing, yoga, backpacking, sewing, and reading.

February WIC of the Month - Margie Tucker

Award Winning Builder, Margie Tucker of Crown Construction of Oregon, is known for her flair for design and goes the extra mile to demonstrate both craftsmanship and creativity. As evident by Crown’s portfolio, this third generation Oregonian captures the elegance and design of all home styles and builds a one of a kind product.

Patricia Day TenEyck December WIC of the Month

NAWIC Portland Chapter 54 is pleased to name Patricia Day TenEyck as our December WIC of the Month.
Since arriving in Portland, Patricia Day TenEyck has been the first Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Oregon, a state support organization whose mission is to raise funds, run marketing campaigns, training programs and lobby on behalf of all 33 Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Oregon.

Aneshka Colas-Dickson November WIC of the Month

Portland 54 is pleased to name Aneshka Colas-Dickson, Vice-President & CFO of Colas Construction, Inc. as our November WIC of the month.

She has been a part of COLAS since June of 1998 working during her summer breaks from college as an office assistant to the accounting staff employed at the time. She currently oversees the financial operations of the company and was recently appointed to a position on the Board of Directors for the Portland Development Commission by Mayor Sam Adams.

Karen Blythe October WIC of the Month

Karen Blythe was recently named the Executive Director of the Greater Portland Construction Partnership (GPCP). GPCP is a nonprofit organization that works to transform safety cultures and achieve injury free construction projects. “Karen’s safety background combined with her fifteen years of experience implementing and building the Construction Industry Crime Prevention Program (CICP) will help the GPCP grow membership and commitment to injury free workplaces”, says Glenn Schulze, President of the GPCP Board of Directors. “We are excited to have her as part of our team and look forward to working with her.” Blythe is also the Executive Director of the CICP and she will continue in that role.
